Overview

BugOut is built on a simple principle: your emergency preparedness data is personal, and it belongs to you. We designed the app to work entirely without a server, without an account, and without any analytics.

What data we collect

We collect no personal data. Specifically:

No name, email address, or contact information
No usage analytics or crash reports sent to our servers
No advertising identifiers or device fingerprinting
No location data
No purchase history beyond what Apple's App Store provides to us as a purchase receipt

Local storage

All app data — your gear checklists, drill history, emergency profile, and score — is stored locally on your device using iOS standard local storage. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly enable a backup or sync option.

iCloud backup

BugOut offers optional backup to iCloud Drive. When enabled, the app saves rolling snapshots of your data to your personal iCloud Drive account. This storage is managed by Apple under your existing iCloud account and is subject to Apple's iCloud privacy policy, not ours. We have no access to your iCloud Drive contents.

Optional cross-device sync

BugOut includes an optional cross-device sync feature powered by a Cloudflare relay. This feature is disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled in Settings. When enabled:

Your data is transmitted through Cloudflare's infrastructure to sync between devices
The relay is anonymous — no account or identity is attached to the sync session
Data in transit is encrypted
We do not store or retain synced data on our servers

You can disable cross-device sync at any time in Settings → Backup & Sync.

Nearby Share

Nearby Share uses your device's Bluetooth and local Wi-Fi radio to transfer checklists directly to other nearby devices running BugOut. No data passes through the internet or any server during a Nearby Share session.

In-app purchases

Pro upgrade purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We receive a receipt confirmation but no payment details, card numbers, or personal information associated with the purchase.

Third-party services

BugOut does not integrate any third-party analytics SDKs, advertising networks, or social login providers. The only third-party infrastructure used is:

Apple iCloud — for optional backup (governed by Apple's privacy policy)
Cloudflare relay — for optional cross-device sync, anonymous and opt-in only
Apple App Store — for purchase processing

Children's privacy

BugOut does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. Because the app collects no personal data from anyone, it is compliant with COPPA by design.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top and, where appropriate, note the change in the App Store release notes.
